What are they about?
It is rare for women in pregnancy to explore their emotional wellbeing or to allow themselves to delve into the depths of the inner adventure taking place in their bodies. Painting allows for this process to occur by engaging the 'right-brain' The purpose of the Birth Art Cafe Workshops is to allow women to paint and draw purely for the process of self-exploration and not for the result (therefore prior art experience is not necessary or required). The workshops provide a setting for self discovery through form and colour a powerful tool for uncovering and dissolving blocks to emotional and spiritual expression. Women attending will be given the support and stimulation to develop their own authentic way of painting and drawing based directly upon their feelings.
Birth Art Cafe: Excerpt from: The Art and Soul of Birth - By Michelle Twiselton and Sue Kinross
Pregnancy is a time of great change on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Giving birth is intuitive and instinctive, and it unfolds in its own time – it is a right brain process. It is perhaps the most natural thing on this Earth for a woman to go through. And yet we live in a left-brain world, where we are used to being (or at least trying to be) in control of our lives, and this control extends to pregnancy and birth in the many options available for pain control, birthing assistance and even the ability to choose the date of the birth.
This left-brain culture is reflected in the types of preparation women will normally receive for birth, which is typically very informative and is certainly useful, yet which fails to engage the intuitive, natural side of the brain as it prepares for something which is in itself very intuitive and natural.
[The goal of Birth Art Café™....] is to to help re-awaken women’s inner wisdom and to empower them to fully trust themselves and listen to their heart to honour their journey into motherhood, however it unfolds.
Painting and sculpting are creative processes which stimulate the primitive part (right side) of the brain, which is the active part of the brain in labour. It allows women to move away from the decision making and thinking of our
left-brained society to a state of simply being – the way we are in labour – and reveals resources and qualities that a woman may not have realised she has, as well as highlighting perceived obstacles, fears and negative beliefs which can then be addressed before the birth. There is no ‘right’ way of approaching it - previous experience is certainly not necessary!
